Makalu is the fifth highest mountain in the world at 8485m above sea level. It is located in the Mahalangur Himalayas 19km southeast of Mount Everest, on the border between Nepal and Tibet Autonomous Region, China. It was first summited on May 15, 1955, by Lionel Terray and Jean Couzy of a French expedition led by Jean Franco. Makalu Base Camp Trek takes you to high-altitude terrains, ethnic Himalayan lifestyle, and snowy landscapes.
Trekking in this region was closed to outsiders until the 1950s when Eric Shipton first trekked into this region. It is possible now to perform the Tea house trek on this route as simpler accommodations are developed or established there. This route goes through Makalu Barun National Park which consists of pristine wilderness and beautiful flora and fauna. From this viewpoint, one can observe the beautiful mountain ranges including Mt.Everest, Mt.Lhotse, Mt.Chamlang, etc. This trek can be fairly challenging as trekking through the tough trails and reaching the heart of one of the mighty mountains is much more difficult than we think. Makalu Base Camp trek starts with the sightseeing of the capital city of our country, Kathmandu. Then trek begins with a scenic flight to Tumlingtar i.e. mid-eastern of Nepal. After reaching there we will begin our trek and trek via Arun valley also known as the deepest valley in the world. Trekking via Sedua will take us to one of the famous passes of this trek i.e. Shipton pass. Trekking ahead will take us to the base camp of Mt. Makalu and then we will enjoy the sightseeing of the beautiful Himalayan ranges. After the sightseeing, we will start to descend and reach Tumlingtar from where we will come back to Kathmandu and then end our trip.
It is a long trek that can take time up to 20 days as well as you will gain more than 5000m in elevation so it is graded as a difficult and challenging trek.
It is situated in the Makalu Barun National Park extending around the Solukhumbu and Sankhuwasabha districts of Nepal.
