Tour Overview

Makalu is the fifth highest mountain in the world at 8485m above sea level. It is located in the Mahalangur Himalayas 19km southeast of Mount Everest, on the border between Nepal and Tibet Autonomous Region, China. It was first summited on May 15, 1955, by Lionel Terray and Jean Couzy of a French expedition led by Jean Franco. Makalu Base Camp Trek takes you to high-altitude terrains, ethnic Himalayan lifestyle, and snowy landscapes.

Trekking in this region was closed to outsiders until the 1950s when Eric Shipton first trekked into this region. It is possible now to perform the Tea house trek on this route as simpler accommodations are developed or established there. This route goes through Makalu Barun National Park which consists of pristine wilderness and beautiful flora and fauna. From this viewpoint, one can observe the beautiful mountain ranges including Mt.Everest, Mt.Lhotse, Mt.Chamlang, etc. This trek can be fairly challenging as trekking through the tough trails and reaching the heart of one of the mighty mountains is much more difficult than we think.  Reaching the base camp and observing the beautiful mountain ranges so closely is a lifetime dream for some of the trekkers and mountaineers of the world. Makalu base camp trek is one of the most demanding and popular trekking destinations in Nepal. Makalu Base Camp trek is designed for those trekkers and mountaineers who wish to trek the Himalayas of Nepal and want to explore the unique culture and lifestyle of people living in this region for many years.

One of the major attractions of this journey is the opportunity to see a wide variety of flora and fauna found only in the Himalayan region of our country. Makalu Base Camp trek is a special package and this journey takes the visitors to some of the most famous places of the Makalu region which include Makalu Barun National Park, Shipton pass, sightseeing of Gurung, and Magar settlements, and so on. People in this region are mostly Gurung, Rai, and Magar. This journey also offers an opportunity to have a close look at the way of living of people in such deep villages.
